Museum collections and our research
Vanhalinna’s museum collections have been built upon Mauno and Ester Wanhalinna’s hobby as collectors. They have told that their desire to collect historical items stemmed from the examples and lifestyles of some of their close relatives. They accumulated their collections mainly from the areas of Lieto and Turku. Included in these collections are agricultural tools and other items, firearms, documents and photographs, and also furniture from the original Phoenix main building of the University of Turku.
All of the fourteen buildings on the Vanhalinna estate are also included in the collections. These buildings were renovated and restored in 1996-2001. The ancient monument sites, and the archaeophyte species growing in the area can also be counted as a part of these museum collections. They are protected under legislation, which is noted in the caretaking of the estate grounds.
